A Peek Through the Hatch: Robert's Most Anticipated Films of 2015

It's time to look at my most anticipated films for 2015 the rest of this year! And what a crazy year it'll be! New James Bond, Avengers, and Star Wars films, not to mention a new film in the Jurassic Park franchise?!? Am I dreaming?

There are a lot of honorable mentions I could go through, but why bother? This year is jam packed with cinematic goodness, or at least, the promise of it. Oh, and by the way, picks 10 - 6 don't have a particular order, but 5 - 1 are truly my most anticipated movies of the year. Thanks in advance for checkin' 'em out.

10. The Martian (November 25, 2015)

Based on the book by Andy Weir, The Martian will follow Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut stranded on Mars. With Matt Damon in the title role and Ridley Scott at the helm, this flick sounds like a winner. This would probably rank higher if I'd read the book. Speaking of, here's an unofficial (?) trailer of sorts for the novel:

9. Spectre (November 6, 2015)

I don't know about you, but Skyfall was my favorite Bond film since Goldeneye. So the fact that Skyfall director Sam Mendes is returning to the director's chair for Bond's next adventure (keep in mind no one has directed consecutive Bond films since John Glen's run in the '80s) is amazing. Monica Bellucci as the Bond girl! Christoph Waltz as the villain! Sign me up!

007

8. Poltergeist (July 24, 2015)

A lot of things are screaming at me about having this on my list. It's a remake. It's supposedly more of a kid's film. But dammit, Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies of all time and Sam Rockwell - the dad in this Gil Kenan directed Sam Raimi produced installment - is never not good. And check out this trailer:

Doesn't look half bad, right?

7. The Fantastic Four (August 7, 2015)

To be completely honest, this movie probably wouldn't have cracked my top 10 until the trailer finally (finally!) came out. There were those rumors that it would be found footage and there was no shortage of oddities about the story and production (Von Doom is now a blogger or something? Director Josh Trank was destroying sets?) Let's hope this is better than the Tim Story flicks and WAY better than the Roger Corman movie.

6. Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15, 2015)

Look at this goddamn trailer!!!

5. Tomorrowland (May 22, 2015)

Ah, the mysterious Tomorrowland. Directed by Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) and Starring George Clooney, the film has been described as "Harry Potter but with science". We haven't seen much besides the excellent trailer below, but maybe that's a good thing.

4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (December 18, 2015)

I'm more of a Trek guy, but there's a lot to be excited for about The Force Awakens. The return of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher is fantastic, the film boasts an impressive group of new actors including Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, and speaking of Trek, J.J. Abrams - director of that franchise's reboots - traded in the Enterprise for the Millennium Falcon and The Force Awakens' directors chair. So we'll see. And this trailer? Oh, this trailer.

3. Jurassic World (June 12, 2015)

I absolutely love Jurassic Park, so this flick is a no-brainer for my #3 spot. We aren't getting human/dinosaur hybrids, but there is some genetic manipulation at play here, a logical step for the series. A fully realized park was also a brilliant idea for a sequel, and Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas-Howard are fine additions to the series' cast. Speaking of, hopefully Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm and/or Sam Neill's Alan Grant show up?

2. Ant-Man (July 17, 2015)

I was beyond upset when director Edgar Wright abandoned this flick, but I'm still excited. Why? I'm glad you asked...

  1. Oscar winner Russell Carpenter serves as the film's cinematographer.
  2. Word is there are some flashbacks to Hank Pym's (Michael Douglas) tenure as Ant-Man, which could show us the likes of Peggy Carter, Howard Stark and Pym working together.
  3. Adam McKay and Paul Rudd worked on the script. Sure, this is infinitely worse than Edgar Wright, but it could be worse.
  4. Paul Rudd! He wasn't my first choice for Ant-Man, but I think he'll be awesome as Scott Lang.
  5. Marvel! Let's not forget, this is Marvel. Remember last year? Winter Soldier? Guardians? Big Hero 6 (now an Academy Award winner)?

And even if this film isn't great, he'll still show up in Avengers movies down the road.

1. Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015)

Yep, the first movie was at the top of my favorites list for 2012, so of course I'm excited for this sequel. Watch out for our countdown series with The Nerd Lunch Podcast crew. I'm very interested in seeing what Whedon's done with these characters, both individually, and as a group. When they're not partying, they'll be fighting Ultron and I'm excited for both.

Obsessive Cinematic Disorder: Who Will Play Ant-Man?

It’s no secret that I’m excited about the Ant-Man film, the flick set to kick of Marvel's "Phase 3". And I’ve never even read any Ant-Man comics (I did, however, watch the entire run of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes...gimme some credit). The character and the film sound intriguing, especially since they’ll both be factoring into the Avengers films. Oh, and Edgar Wright is directing the movie. I’m a big Wright fan.

Collider

I read a rumor on JoBlo.com this week that Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer and Edgar Wright visited the set of Captain America 2, which led many to think that Hammer would be paying Ant-Man in Wright’s film. Wright denied this via Twitter.

But Wright will soon be done with The World’s End, and after that film’s release and all the promotional hullabaloo is over with, his attention will inevitably turn to Ant-Man. Casting can’t be too far away, especially since it sounds like Phase 3 is gearing up pretty fast in general. So I wanted to look at a few choices for the role.

Armie Hammer

I don’t know about this. Armie Hammer was okay in The Social Network but I haven't seen him in anything else. I’m sort of withholding judgment until I see The Lone Ranger. But something about the way he responded when questioned about Ant-Man just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it’s the fact that he claimed to not know who Edgar Wright is. Do you live on this planet?

Nathan Fillion

Wikipedia

For some reason Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion has been rumored for the role, but then he more or less shit on the character. So forget him.

Simon Pegg

Pegg, one of the stars of Edgar Wright's "Blood and Ice Cream trilogy", obviously works with the director on a steady basis, so this makes a lot of sense on paper. I love him but I don’t know that he’d be right for the role. Plus it looks like his dance card is full for a while.

Adam Scott

Wikipedia

As far as I know, Party Down and Parks and Recreation star Adam Scott hasn’t been rumored for the role at all, other than in my head. He’s a talented actor and I think he really needs more roles (and not Hot Tub Time Machine 2). Sure, he’s mostly in comedies, but I don’t think the action genre is beyond his reach by any means (if you want to see him outside of a comedy role, check out The Vicious Kind). Plus, there’s plenty of opportunities for comedy in Ant-Man and future Avengers films.

In short, Edgar Wright, if you’re reading this, please cast Adam Scott as Ant-Man (even if he doesn't want the role).

Batch o’ Hatch: Thoughts on Creature from the Black Lagoon, Pacific Rim Watch Update, and One Badass "Film Map"

Man, it’s been a while since we’ve had a fresh Batch! Enjoy this particularly strong brew and feel free to leave us a comment!

Thoughts on Creature from the Black Lagoon at Sun-Ray Cinema

Saturday was a special night, since Sun-Ray Cinema screened Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D. Star Julie Adams - accompanied by her son - introduced the film and stayed on to answer some questions and sign some autographs.

The film looked great. Compare it to a newer 3D film featuring a lot of underwater scenes like Piranha (which was post-converted to 3D) and it's like apples and oranges. Something like the latter looks dark and muted due to the post conversion process. Anyway, that sounds right.

The film has actually aged pretty well. Sure, effects and makeup have come a long way, but Gill-man still looks pretty good. There was a little too much laughing from the audience in certain scenes (as I recall, mostly when the fossilized Gill-man hand was being excavated and examined) but, all in all, the film held up.

Julie Adams is still awesome. She kicked the evening off with a playful “Welcome to the Black Lagoon.” If you’re unfamiliar with her (hell, Creature is the only thing I’ve seen her in, despite a very impressive filmography), picture the precursor to Jennifer Connelly and you’re on the right track.

IMDb

Thanks to everyone that participated in our contest - a fella named Brian Andrews walked away with the Gill-man and the Sun-Ray gift card. Keep your eyes peeled for more contests here on the site - they’re going to become more of a regular thing.

Pacific Rim Watch Update

Couple updates for you Pacific Rim fans. JoBlo.com posted this piece about a few new pictures that have been released. Even this is enough to excite me.

Also, not so much of an update as a weird observation. I recently re-watched all of Undeclared (Judd Apatow and company’s excellent one-season show about freshman Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel) and his pals as they navigate college - seriously, watch it) and realized that Steven’s British roommate on the show is none other than Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam! Holy crap! He looks completely different now!

One Badass “Film Map”

So your friend and mine Tiff McEscapehatchenstein got me a sweet-ass “Film Map” for my birthday (this was back in December...I guess I’ve been busy).

Anyway, the map is basically a load of movie titles placed like landmarks on a map. You’ve got locations such as “Lake Placid”, “The Temple of Doom”, and “Phantom of the Opera”. “Shutter Island” is a brisk swim from “The Island of Dr. Moreau”. You can pay your respects at “Pet Sematary” and then catch a few winks at “Hostel”. Basically, it’s one of the coolest things ever made. Peep a few pics below.

Batch o’ Hatch: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Return of Hellboy and The Punisher, and Ant-Man

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Hot off the success of Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson has cast Johnny Depp in his new film The Grand Budapest Hotel, reports The Playlist. Title kinda reminds me of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel...

Grass is green. I’m excited to see this. I’m already getting a The Royal Tenenbaums vibe from it, probably because that Anderson film featured some hotels. Now that I think about it, a lot of Anderson's films feature hotels...

Do you like the idea of Johnny Depp in an Anderson movie?

Wikipedia

The Return of Hellboy and The Punisher

Ron Perlman recently solidified his status as an amazing guy by putting the Hellboy makeup on one more time to visit a young fan with leukemia.

JoBlo.com

And word is now that Perlman and director Guillermo del Toro may make a Hellboy 3 after all. But then again, del Toro is now claiming he might make At the Mountains of Madness after all as well. That guy over-commits.

In other news, Thomas Jane made a pretty awesome short Punisher sequel. It’s got some oddities - you’ll notice one big disturbing thing plus some The Dark Knight soundtrack sampling. Oh and Ron Perlman’s in this as well. Check it out at JoBlo.com over here.

What do you guys think of these returning characters?

Ant-Man

Nobody seems to like Ant-Man. He was a founding member of The Avengers in the comics, but he’s nowhere to be found in the recent slew of movies. Nathan Fillion - a geek favorite for the role -  thinks he’s a joke.

Director Edgar Wright’s been trying to get an Ant-Man film made for years now, and I’ve held out hope that he’d be a great character. Now that Wright has screened some test footage at Comic Con, I gotta say, I’d love to see a full length movie. I adore everything Edgar Wright has ever committed to film and I’ve yet to see a bad Avengers film, so I'm all for it.

It’ll still be a while before we see this movie, since Mr. Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are gearing up to film the final entry in their “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy, The World’s End.

Is anyone out there a fan of Ant-Man besides me?

p.s. Sorry for using the phrase "Hot off".
