Favorite Scene Friday! Elf: Christmas Spirit in Central Park

Quick - what’s the last great Christmas classic? If you said Elf, you’re awesome!

Elf has it all - a unique Christmas story (a human - Buddy - is raised at the North Pole as one of Santa’s elves), Jon Favreau as director, Will Ferrell (Buddy) at the top of his game, the lovely Zooey Deschanel (before she became “adorkable”), and a genuine, warm, infectious Christmas spirit (bonus points for the New York setting).

Our scene this week is near the end of the film, after Buddy has met up with a crash-landed-in-Central-Park Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Santa needs to finish delivering presents, but with the rocket that powers his sleigh on the fritz, things are looking grim. You see, the sleigh used to run on Christmas Spirit, but there isn’t much of it left in the world. To make matters worse, the “Central Park Rangers” - a group Santa put on the Naughty List - is hot on their trail.

Funny story about Elf - on Christmas Eve two years ago I came down with a bad case of food poisoning. I was sick as a cotton-headed ninny-muggins and had to miss a friend’s Christmas Eve party which, for as long as I can remember, has been a holiday tradition. It turns out, however, that my dad stayed home to make sure I didn’t do something like burn our Christmas tree due to a weird fever dream. My dad made me chicken noodle soup. We watched Elf. I started to feel a little bit better.  That’s it!

Happy Friday, Weekend, Christmas, Holidays, and New Year! I hope your Clausometer red-lines!

  1. I need to go back and watch this again. It seems like it's gathered quite a following over the years.
