Music Video Monday! Duran Duran: Girls on Film

When I was just a wee lad, I lived in a small, rural, northern Illinois town and back then we didn’t have access to that new fangled thing called cable television. So anytime I got to visit my grandparents, who had cable, I knew that if I could get my grandfather to watch something other than Hee Haw, Lawrence Welk or wrestling, I was going to be exposed to the thing that killed the radio star, yes the music video. Each time I visited, I would flip on MTV, (that's right kids they used to play music videos for more than just a couple of hours a day), and my world would be blown away. Finally, I could see the musicians and bands that sang the songs I loved, with all of their coolness, oddities, cheesiness and sexuality on full display. It’s the latter that I want to focus on for today’s Music Video Monday.

Duran Duran was “the band” during the early to mid-80’s when it came to cool and that cool appealed to many women across the world. So with that resource at their disposal, Duran Duran would go on to feature some incredibly attractive women in their racy videos. The raciest being the “night version” of the 1981, re-issued in 1983, single “Girls on Film.” It wasn’t MTV that showed it, but thanks to the wonderful world of cable television, there was a music video channel, the name escapes me, that played it and still after all of these years I thank them for doing so. If you can make it through the first 1:43, you will not be disappointed, a little surprised, but not disappointed. For those of you with virgin eyes, you may want to watch the “daytime version”. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gudEttJlw3s and for those perverts who don’t mind a little skin enjoy the video below.
