Music Video Monday: Put the Movie to Sleep Already and Just Crank the Soundtrack!

Happy Monday, Kiddies!  Hope your weekend and Oscar picks unfolded to your liking.  In early May, the Hatch will ascend up to Atlanta, GA for its Shaky Knees Festival and today's Music Video Monday will undoubtedly be a highlight of that weekend.  Delta Spirit is a favorite here in the Hatch, which should come as no surprise if you frequent the blog, so today's song should come across as one of those "lying in wait" videos.  So allow me to free it of that burden and share it with you.  What I find surprising is that the only video for the song comes from the soundtrack to the recently released, Warm Bodies.  I didn't care too much for the movie, but that's probably because I'm way too familiar with the tale of Romeo & Juliet and don't think a zombie version should be relevant, but I understand today's kids and their lack of focus, so way-to-go Hollywood (I guess).  The song on the other hand, is fantastic and has lived in my head ever since I saw the movie. I was even more thrilled when I discovered I already owned the song, Woo Hoo!

"Yamaha" isn't a fast number by any means, but it is a compelling number by all means.  The song sounds like it is sung in a dream-like state which adds to its relevance.  I'm not the number one fan of D.S. here in the Hatch (that'd probably be Pat), nor am I the number two (that'd be Tiff), but I'd venture to say that I'm the biggest fan of this song.  It's very atmospheric and that's why I dig it so much, and I'm sure you will too.  Enjoy the video (let it take the place of watching the whole movie, this video and especially the song provide more than the movie ever could) and have a good week.

Obsessive Cinematic Disorder: Abe Vigoda is Really Old

Abe Vigoda turns 92 today. The actor was born on February 24, 1921 and first got into show business in 1947. You might know him from Barney Miller or Fish, or from his appearances in films like The Godfather or Look Who’s Talking.

To put Abe Vigoda’s age in perspective, Rodney Dangerfield, Charles Bronson and Chuck Connors were all born in 1921 as well. And, unfortunately, they’ve all passed away. But not to be outdone,Vigoda has actually been reported dead twice, once in 1982 and again in 1987.

The reason I wanted to highlight Vigoda's birthday and the tiny detail snagged in my OCD brain is this: as I already mentioned, Vigoda appeared in Look Who’s Talking, playing the senile grandfather of John Travolta’s character. Okay, do the math - Look Who’s Talking came out in 1989 and it’s 2013 - a difference of 24 years. That’s right, Abe Vigoda was playing senile grandpas a quarter of a century ago ANDHE’SSTILLALIVETODAY. It boggles the mind.

So happy birthday, Abe Vigoda! May you be falsely reported dead for years to come.

Favorite Scene Friday! Dirty Dancing: You're Wild!!!

Today I give you a scene from one of my favorite movies of all time.  I know this one is pretty much a chick-flick cliche, but I just can't help myself.

The scene actually begins at around the 0:52 mark of the video.  If you're not familiar with the story, Jennifer Grey's character, Baby, is vacationing with her parents in the Catskills in the summer of 1963.  Our Baby has a good head on her shoulders.  She's a devoted daddy's girl with a bright future.  But when she meets Patrick Swayze's Johnny, a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks hired to teach dance lessons at the resort, everything changes.  Baby is forbidden from having anything to do with Johnny, but she's in love and she does it anyway.  In this scene, irritated and on edge from being cooped up for too long rehearsing for a dance Baby is filling in on, Johnny decides they need a break.  You'll see the rest.

The reason I love this scene is that it's full of pure joy.  Why do we typically do things we're not supposed to do?  Because it feels GOOD.  And Baby knows, in this moment, that she wouldn't trade being there with Johnny, this wild man who has totally changed her world, for anything.  When Robert and I saw the movie in the theatre recently (one of my top movie experiences), we both knew what I was talking about.  And if Patrick Swayze's grin doesn't convince you to love this scene, I don't know what will.

Happy Friday, friends!  Here's to being WIIILLLLLDDDD!!!

Pacific Rim Watch Update #1

I recently posted my Most Anticipated Films of 2013 and #1 on that list was Pacific Rim. The film won’t be released until July 12th but I’ve started Pacific Rim Watch! to get by until then. For our first update I’ve just got a few tweets for you. If you’re looking forward to this film as much as I am, enjoy! And if you happen across any cool Pacific Rim news or tidbits, share them with me! You can even use the #PacificRimWatch hashtag on Twitter (if that’s your thing).

WB Pictures did a nifty Valentine's card for the film.
Very cool concept art.

Music Video Monday! Empire of the Sun: Walking On A Dream

For today's Music Video Monday!, I give you a pretty damn awesome song by the rather eccentric Australian duo, Empire of the Sun.  The funny thing is that when watching the video for Walking On A Dream, one could easily be led to believe that they are some sort of spoof band.  Flight of the Conchords comes to mind.  But when you listen to the song, you realize they are genuinely talented.

I admittedly don't know much about the band, other than having a couple of their songs.  This one has actually been in more than its share of movies.  I discovered it on an old recommended iTunes playlist and since then, I seem to hear it in so many different things I see.  The video (filmed in Shanghai), the costumes, the dancing...lets face it...pretty much everything about them is a little out there.  But the song is beautiful and hopeful and makes me want to get up and dance...and there is nothing wrong with that.  It's definitely a good tune to kick off the week!

Happy Monday, everyone!

Favorite Scene Friday!: Our Idiot Brother

 "It's been a hard week."

It wasn't a big hit in the theaters, but Our Idiot Brother is a big hit in my heart. I love this movie. The main character Ned (Paul Rudd) is so carefree that you can't help but fall in love with him and even envy him just a little bit. Even when his life is in the shitter, Ned stays positive. It's a mindset more people, including myself, should consider. There are some days I would love to live like Ned, minus the crocs, but I gotta pay the bills.

If you haven't seen Our Idiot Brother, it's a quirky little movie about Ned and his relationships with his three sisters, mother, ex-girlfriend and others. Not only is the movie entertaining, the cast is amazing: Rudd, Adam Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Rashida Jones, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Zooey Deschanel, Kathryn Hahn and T.J. Miller.

In today's scene, Ned is working at a fruit and vegetable stand when a police officer approaches. Ned, being the kind heart that he is, falls for an obvious example of entrapment. There is a line during this exchange "Roll it up, toke it up, do it up. Mary Jane", that reminds me of Chris Farley in Black Sheep when he is talking to the kids behind the convenient store. "Smokin', snortin', shootin', suckin', tokin', poppin', droppin," Man, Farley was a funny son of a bitch. Well I hope you had an excellent Friday and more importantly I hope you get an extra day like me.

The EH List

The EH List is my attempt at periodically (monthly?) gathering all the music we showcase here on the blog and some tunes shared by others. This is by no means original, but I thought it would be fun and a great way for me to get more into the music aspect of our site. So without further ado...

"Across 110th Street"
Bobby Womack

Alex over at And So It Begins... featured this song in his “Top 15 Song Moments in Quentin Tarantino Films” piece a while back. The tune pops up in Jackie Brown. Still catching myself singing it every now and then.

Wikipedia

"Baby Blue"
Scanners

Tiff featured this song in her Music Video Monday last month, after hearing it in an episode of Shameless. Tiff’s ordered me under pain of death to start watching this show (I’m getting to it). Anyone else a fan?

"Hold On"
Alabama Shakes

This was my pick for Music Video Monday last month. The Shakes didn’t win any Grammys but they’re still great in my book.

“Ghost Tonight”
Chairlift

This is just a badass song I stumbled upon. So good. These guys got their start by doing music for haunted houses. Who knew that was a thing?

chairlifted.com

“True Romance”
Citizens!

A song Tiff recommended. I don't think it has anything to do with the movie (which I recently just watched for the first time).

“Breakers”
Local Natives

Another song Tiff recommended.

"Once in Awhile"
Don't Stop or We'll Die

Mike from 20 Something Awesome featured "Once in Awhile" in a recent Song of the Day post. Let him know what you think of the tune.

"Where Is My Mind?"
Pixies

Pete from I Love That Film did last week’s Favorite Scene Friday and chose to highlight the final scene of Fight Club. The clip is set to the tune “Where Is My Mind?” by the Pixies. I couldn't see it happening any other way.

Fight Club

“Control Yourself”/“Do The Trick”/“Warrior Man”
Dr. Dog

Pat chose these three Dr. Dog tunes for this week’s Music Video Monday. Why, you may ask? It has a little something to do with the Shaky Knees Music Fest. Read more at Shaky Knees’ site here.

“Jump Into The Fog”
The Wombats

This is just another song I found badass.

♫What a great achievement it was
To get a hotel room this late
I bet they charge by the hour here
The kind of place where you should bring your own UV ray♫

As you can see, I've embedded a Spotify EH List below. Unfortunately it only displays the first eight tracks (seriously?) but if you click play it should take you to Spotify to hear the whole playlist. If you have some free time today give it a listen!

Thanks for reading/listening!

Music Video Monday!: Shaky in the Knees for Dr. Dog

Good Monday to you all. I come to you in quite a pleasant mood, because as of last Thursday I became an ecstatic ticket holder to the inaugural Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta, May 4 & 5. As a friend said, “It’s like they used your iTunes library to set the lineup.” I anticipate it being one of the best festivals I’ve ever attended and today I’d like to focus on one of the bands that's part of the amazing line up.

It’s no secret that the Hatch loves Dr. Dog. We’ve seen them multiple times over the past 3 years and even traveled to Atlanta last year. Recently I unsuccessfully attempted to have them play at my birthday party two weeks ago. Fret not; I’ve already started my campaign for next year. Wish me luck. So in my continued effort to inundate the last person on earth or at least each of you that stops by the blog, I’m going to Dr. Dog video bomb you today.

The first is an unofficial video for the bonus track, “Control Yourself”. Make sure you pay close attention to the end. I’ve seen Robert do something very similar.

Video #2 is for the track, “Do The Trick”.  Three words: Star Wars Trilogy.

And video #3 is a little Toby time for T. “Warrior Man”. Hope you enjoy!

We hope you can join us for the trip to Atlanta. I think you’d love Dr. Dog and you’d definitely love hanging with us. Have a super Monday and remember to live your soundtrack out loud.
