Damn, they forgot their Music
Video Monday again. It’s happened
before and I’m sure it will happen again, but this is not one of those
times. I purposefully kept you out in
the cold yesterday so I could premiere (on our blog) Bob Dylan’s new video for Duquesne Whistle from his 35th,
yes 35th, studio album Tempest,
available today. I will be purchasing
this album later today to be sure and admittedly I’ve, also purposefully, not
listened to anything from it simply because I like to go in fresh. Even today’s video I have not previewed, save
for the first minute. It looks to be a
fun, little video though, with hints of a scene from the incredible Joseph
Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel movie, (500)
Days of Summer. If you’ve seen the
movie, you’ll know what I mean.
I know today is a devastating anniversary for American
soils, but I find no truer testament to the contribution of American music than
that of Mr. Robert Zimmerman (Dylan’s real name). So I thought he’d be a fitting contribution
to this week’s installment of MVM. After
all, what better way to say ‘fuck you, terrorists’ than to crank up Bob
and crack open a Budweiser?
It hurts me to believe it, but I’m pretty sure not many of
you reading this are big Dylan fans (after all, I’m the only one in the Hatch
that blesses my ears with that raspy, smoky, sultry voice) but I encourage you
to give him another shot. You don’t have
to do so with this album, but check out his early stuff again. It speaks volumes even to this day. Whenever I listen to new singer/songwriters,
be it Josh Ritter, Ryan Adams, Jose Gonzalez, Joe Purdy, or An Atlas to Follow,
I always liken them to Dylan and if they can hold up (as most I just listed do),
they are gold in my book. I’m looking
forward to the purchase today so I can place the CD next to the other 34 albums
of Dylan’s that I keep on their own shelf.
I’ve heard from friends that he’s not much to listen to live anymore,
but he still impresses me with his studio work and what he has to say. I hope he’ll eventually impress you too, once
you take my advice and listen to his back catalogue that is (hell, just pick up
Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, Bringing It All Back Home, Desire, and Highway 61 Revisited and you’ll understand what I mean). Enjoy the week, folks and Happy Tuesday!
I have to say one of the worst concerts I have ever been to was in fact Mr. Dylans a few years back. He totally phoned it in, didn't acknowledge the crowd at all, and basically sucked all forms of ass. I still consider myself a fan of his, I'll just never see him live again.
ReplyDeleteToday I was listening to the 14 min title track from new album, Tempest (about Titanic). I really enjoyed it, but just feel song has nothing new to add that hasn't already been said about the sinking?
ReplyDeleteDuquesne Whistle is a solid tune, though the violence in the music video seemed a bit over the top? I admire Dylan more as a lyricist than a singer these days. I think my dad said ever since he had a motorcycle crash Dylan's voice hasn't been quite the same.
