Favorite Scene Friday! So I Married An Axe Murderer: Charlie's Dad

For this Favorite Scene Friday, I decided to round out our Mike Myers scenes with one of my favorites of his movies (second only to Wayne's World).  In So I Married An Axe Murderer, Myers plays Charlie, a lovably dorky beat poet who falls in love with Harriet, a beautiful butcher with a more than questionable past.  While Mike plays the role of Charlie very well, it's actually his portrayal of Charlie's father, Stuart Mackenzie, that makes this one a must-see.

In the following compilation of scenes, we get to see the best of Stuart Mackenzie, an ornery old Scot whose verbally abusive tendencies make him all the more lovable.  We also meet Charlie's mom May, who gives the expression "desperate housewife" a whole new meaning, as well as his best friend, Detective Tony Giardano, and his long-suffering, much younger brother William (the main victim of Charlie's aforementioned abuse).

These clips also include my other favorite part of this movie - Stuart's hilarious conspiracy theories.  I think I love this part because it reminds me of my father, whose theories are usually equally funny and scary and, a lot of times, true.  My father was actually the first person who ever told me about Bilderberg Group (strangely similar to Stuart's theory), and this was years ago when it was still underground (long before it had a wikipedia page, or any page for that matter).  But, I digress.

Please enjoy watching clips of the hilarity of this movie, including Stuarts rants, May's near molestation of Detective Tony, and an old bagpiper who isn't quite winded enough to make it through a Rod Stewart classic.  And, as if I could forget, the abuse of William's "virtual planetoid" head!

Happy Friday, everyone!

A Peek Through the Hatch: V/H/S

Robert’s Preview

Hey youse guys. We’re gonna check out the found footage anthology horror flick V/H/S tonight. If you haven’t heard anything about it, here’s the synopsis (courtesy of IMDb) and the trailer:

“When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.”

I think a found footage flick like this has the potential to avoid the repetitiveness that the horror subgenre sometimes carries with it. I don’t know about you, but sometimes an hour and thirty minutes of home video quality shots of someone running through the woods kinda gets to me. We have six different stories to enjoy here, all unique. I’m hoping this keeps the movie fresh and fun.

If you’re like me and enjoy other anthologies like Creepshow or the more recent Trick ‘r Treat, you’re quite excited for V/H/S (man I hate typingthoseforwardSLASHES!!!). Creepshow spawned a few sequels (and Trick ‘r Treat is trying to) and hopefully - if this new film is good - we’ll see some more found footage shorts throughout the years.

H/a/v/e/a/g/r/e/a/t/w/e/e/k/e/n/d/,/g/u/y/s/.

Nick’s Preview

When I first watched the trailer for V/H/S, I was extremely giddy and ultimately enticed.  Being a true horror fan that grew up with the likes of Creepshow 1 & 2, Body Bags, Cat’s Eye, Campfire Tales, and Twilight Zone: The Movie; I find horror anthologies to be devilishly delightful.  I smiled throughout Trick `r Treat, I dug Stephen King’s Nightmares and Dreamscapes (TNT series), and I still watch Tales From The Crypt and The Twilight Zone (original b&w episodes).  Needless to say, but I will anyway, I love the horror genre.  Even though most additions to this genre are sub par at best, I still look for new entries to shock, awe, and titillate.  V/H/S has a lot to live up to regarding my expectations, but (unlike the wretched The Innkeepers) I have a good feeling that this anthology will be right up my alley.

Wikipedia

Admittedly, I’m a fan of the “found footage” subgenre.  I like each one of the Paranormal Activity movies and will definitely be enjoying the 4th installment next month.  I was wowed with how freaky Grave Encounters was (regardless of the questionable actors & dialogue).  Catfish even kept my interest throughout and even though the good ones are few and far between, I’m constantly adding “found footage” flicks to my Netflix instant queue.  It was only a matter of time until someone thought up the idea to combine “found footage” and horror anthologies into one, creepy ass mixed bag of terror.  And “kudos” to you all in Hollywood that made this happen.

At this point in time, in the savage year of our lord, 2012, VHS tapes are generally just creepy all around.  They lack the nostalgic-ness of vinyl, the comedy of cassettes, and the pointlessness of floppy discs yet they still hang around like your grandfather’s nasty older brother at the local swimming pool.  I can’t help but to think of the plot of The Ring when I think about popping in an old VHS (The Ring is a solid entry in the horror genre, I don’t care who you are) and maybe that’s why I’m so excited for V/H/S.  Regardless, the film boasts that “each entry is more terrifying than the last” so I expect to be blown away by the end.

Here’s to the summer that now was and the frightening fall that lies ahead.  Cheers!

Now Hear This!: Frabbits, Muse and Stone Sour

I recently told you about the trinity of music awesomeness, a.k.a., September 18. The new music Tuesday that will usher in the return of two favorites, The Killers and Grizzly Bear, plus a new one from the indie rock group Band of Horses. As amazing as this day is, it's only one Tuesday of back to back months that will shower us with great music.

Getting it started on September 11, The Avett Brothers will release The Carpenter. It'll be interesting to hear if the North Carolina brothers move even closer towards the mainstream love they received in 2009-2010 or return to their folksy roots. Who knows? One thing is certain, these guys have never been the type to shy away from eclecticism. That same day the immortal Bob Dylan releases his 35th studio album, Tempest.

On the 25th, the much anticipated album, Babel from the folk darlings of 2010, Mumford and Sons hits stores. I've read that it will not be much different from their debut and after hearing the lead single, "I Will Wait" that seems accurate. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Also on the 25th with much less fanfare, Frightened Rabbit will release an EP called State Hospital. Last week, the the Scottish rockers threw us a bone with the title track, see video below.

October 2 gives us new music from Matt & Kim, the upbeat duo will release Lightning, the British rockers Muse stay theatrical with The 2nd Law (video for "Madness" below) and alt-rockers Papa Roach try to stay relevant with The Connection. On the 16th, Benjamin (Ben) Gibbard takes a break from Death Cab for Cutie to go solo with Former Lives

Stone Sour rocks the month of hauntings with Part 1 of a double album called House of Gold & Bones, out October 23. Part 2 is scheduled to be released in May. It's a concept album, which can be really good like Funeral, Neon Bible and The Suburbs or really bad like Kilroy Was Here. I'm excited and apprehensive at the same time because the last album, Audio Secrecy, got way too poppy and Scott Stapp like for my taste, see video for the song, "Hesitate". The first two songs from the album have somewhat set my mind at ease. They are hard, loud and fast. It's what I expect from a Stone Sour album. Below is the audio for  "Gone Sovereign" and "Absolute Zero".

If you have any albums that you are anxiously anticipating let us know. We'd love to hear from you, but until then, make sure to live your soundtrack out loud.

Music Video Monday!: Band of Horses

Ben Bridwell is a perfect example of, "don’t judge a book by it’s cover." The scruffy, tattooed lead singer of Band of Horses looks like the last person who would produce some of the best harmonies in indie rock music today, but that's just what Bridwell and his band mates have done. I don’t say this about a lot of male singers, but Bridwell takes me somewhere else every time I listen to him. I don't know how to quite explain it, but if I close my eyes I can lose myself to his voice. He has a unique and soothing sound, but not like Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Bridwell is a perfect mix of harmony, soul and very often I can hear his South Carolina roots boarding on country gold. Before I sound like a total fan girl, let me move along to today’s Music Video Monday.

I struggled this week because Band of Horses have so many great songs. If you are not aware of their catalog, I encourage you to immediately dive deep into it. I’ll help you out today by giving you three from their most recent release Infinite Arms, “Blue Beard”, “Dilly” and a live version of “Factory”. Then if you aren’t quite convinced, I’ve included the video for their first single, “Knock Knock” off of the upcoming album MirageRock, out September 18.

I’ve already pre-ordered Mirage Rock and I’m stoked because they will be performing at the House of Blues in Orlando, October 15. It won’t make up for the cancelled Kings of Leon show, but it will be awesome to finally see them live. I hope you enjoy the videos, your Monday and remember to live your soundtrack out loud.

Favorite Scene Friday Double Feature! Inglorious Basterds and Spaceballs!

Nick recently threw down the gauntlet by posting a scene from Wayne's World 2 a week after Pat shared a clip from Austin Powers in Goldmember. I love a good Favorite Scene Friday theme, so I had to share a Mike Myers scene.

I've chosen a film that you might not associate with Myers right off the bat - Inglorious Basterds. The scene below is the only screen time the actor has in the entire film. Not to mention that the gentleman Myers shares the scene with pretty much steals the show. Basterds is an incredible film (I just watched it again recently) and this scene in particular - considering the two actors involved and the fact that it it has quite a bit to do with movies - is particularly fun. Sorry for the volume...

You might be asking yourself, "Robert, why the pairing of Inglorious Basterds and Spaceballs?" Let me explain...

At midnight tonight and tomorrow, Sun-Ray Cinema here in Jacksonville is showing Spaceballs. The flick's got some hilarious scenes, and since the theater's playing it this weekend, I really wanted to share one of my favorites. I had to go for the turkey with Myers scenes, but the scene below is tagging along for the ride.

This clip is genius and surely the inspiration for modern comedic long takes like this. The whole movie amounts to the greatest space spoof ever and - if you're in Jacksonville - you'd be wise to stop by Sun-Ray for one of the screenings. The Schwartz is strong with them...

Favorite Scene Friday: Mind If I Do a Lowercase J?

Last week’s FSF gave you a glimpse into the comedic phenomenalness (is that a word yet?) of Mr. Mike Myers.  No, I’m not referring to the greatest serial killer in cinema history, I’m talking about the guy that has given us so many memorable characters that it’s just so damn tedious to try to dislike him.   Hell, I even think the poorly received The Love Guru is quite hilarious . . . and yes, I do want a Morgan Freeman voiceover machine, thank you for asking.  Without expressing out loud to the rest of the Hatch, I thought I’d follow in Pat’s footsteps and give you another hilarious scene from the resume’ of Myers.  This one comes from Wayne’s World 2 and is two and a half minutes of pure funny.  I love everything about this scene:  Garth’s t-shirt and his attention to “applications,” Kim Basinger’s awkwardness, Kevin Pollack’s assholeness, and of course all the eye-poking.

It’s difficult to pretend to not notice someone’s abnormality (please be aware I hold absolutely no vendetta against abnormalities – I just mean to point out that they are noticeable and it is funny to be the one purposefully not noticing), but we do it all the time in the way of being polite.  Wayne and Garth try their best to be as polite as possible, but fail in all respects.  When I first saw this movie, I lost it when “. . . lowercase j’s” rolled out of Myer’s mouth.  The timing, the awkwardness, the bluntness of the previous pokes all boils up to this apex and it’s delivered perfectly.  I love it and I hope you do too.  Who knows; maybe the rest of the Hatch will follow Pat and me and grant you with two more hilarious Myers scenes from his other works . . . maybe even an old SNL skit, who knows???  All I know is I’m glad it’s Friday as I’m sure you are too.  Have a great weekend, guys and gals and watch Wayne’s World 2 again.  It totally holds up!

Music Video Monday! I Melt With The Clash!

This week’s installment of Music Video Monday comes to you courtesy of one of the grooviest, punkiest, reggaiest bands ever to take the stage:  The Clash.  Charlie Don’t Surf is a track off the 1980 double album, Sandinista!  While that album is not a favorite of mine, the song, as of this summer, has become a favorite and has gotten a solid following (by me) on my iPod.  I’m not entirely sure why it hit me the way it did when I first heard it, but … it did.

I was in a particularly downtrodden mood one rainy Monday afternoon and I needed something to watch that could match my mood without trumping it.  That “something” turned into the poorly received I Melt With You starring a couple of my personal favorite actors:  Thomas Jane and Rob Lowe.  Released in 2011 with a strong supporting cast (Jeremy Piven and Carla Gugino) and a downright depressing plot, the movie received nothing but shitty reviews.  IMDB has it listed as 5.5 out of 10 stars and Rotten Tomatoes has certified it at a solid 45%.  Not very promising, I know, but I’m not trying to sell you the movie by any means, only the song.  In the movie, Jane’s character is the first to wake up one morning surrounded by hints of debauchery (empty alcohol bottles, a mirror supporting a hill of coke, leftover roaches, etc. etc.) and decides that the week is just getting started . . .

n        Side Note – the plot revolves around 4 grown men who get together once a year at a prestigious house on the beach to recount their partying ways.  In other words, they get together to escape the mundaneness of their lives.  All spoilers aside – Escape they do.

. . .  so he grabs a half full bottle of beer (I’m an optimist), takes a swig followed by a bump off the hill and immediately turns on the nearby stereo.  He dances, he rejoices, he wakes up the other 3 guys and they all, in their own ways, take in the aura of what exactly they are doing there in the first place.  Charlie Don’t Surf is the soundtrack to this scene and while I couldn’t find the exact scene, I did find a fan made video recounting war and rock–n–roll (nothing to do with the movie though, sorry about that).  The video is alright, the song is amazing and the movie is depressing, but all resonate with me anyway.  Enjoy the tune and have a kick-ass week.  Happy Monday!

Favorite Scene Friday!: Preparation H Goes Ahead As Planned

In recognition of the newest installment to the James Bond franchise, Skyfall out November 9th, today's Favorite Scene comes from the greatest spy, well at least the sexiest, well at least the best dressed, screw it I give up. There have been at least six credited 007's, but there is only one Austin Powers, the International Man of Mystery himself. The spy that always catches his man and frequently beds the woman.

Recently Nick and I were talking about the James Bond series and how we really couldn't get into it. When I had Netflix, I once made an attempt to watch all of the Bond films in order, but I think I only made it through the fifth film, "You Only Live Twice". Go ahead, pull my man card. I just couldn't do it. Maybe someday I'll give it another try, but in the meantime I give you the crushed velvet covered Austin Powers.

The scene comes from, Austin Powers in Goldmember, the 2002 release and third installment in the Powers' trilogy. Loosely based on the 007 movie Goldfinger as well as other Bond films, Austin battles his familiar foes Dr. Evil, Mini-Me, Fat Bastard and an even eviler Scott Evil. However, the real villain is the ruthless, pancake eating, roller skating, gold "membered" Johan van der Smut, a.k.a., Goldmember. The evil Goldmember has plans to flood the world, but as he always does Austin is able to save the day. Hope you enjoy the scene and have a Great Friday Bay Bee!. Sorry I had to do it.

Batch o’ Hatch: This One’s For You Edition

Occasionally I come across movie news and stories that (hopefully) appeal to my friends and fellow bloggers. They may have already heard about these but I’ll share them anyway.

The Joker/Tom Waits - for Nick

I thought our very own Nick would get a kick out of this. Last week The Hollywood Reporter posted a story featuring old footage of musician Tom Waits that may or may not have inspired Heath Ledger’s The Joker. I’m pretty sure Nick is a big Waits fan so maybe he can weigh in for me.

A Night in the Woods - for Pete @ I Love That Film

Pete over at I Love That Film is getting his PhD in Found Footage Films (for real), so I was curious about what he thought of this trailer for the upcoming A Night in the Woods that Arrow in the Head shared last week. It might be decent, plus the filmmakers involved are definitely interesting.

Oh, and the preview for Paranormal Activity 4 recently appeared online. Looks pretty tired.

I’m pretty sure Pete’s on his honeymoon so I won’t hold my breath for a response on this one.

Liberal Arts - for Shala @ Life Between Films

Josh Radnor from How I Met Your Mother has been trying his hand at directing lately. I didn’t catch his first flick, Happythankyoumoreplease, but Shala at Life Between Films recently featured it on her Movies on Repeat post.

Wikipedia
Radnor’s gone and done it again - Liberal Arts, the follow up to Happy is coming our way. I don’t know why but this film appeals to me way more than Radnor’s first film ever did. It might have something to do with Richard Jenkins but it definitely has something to do with Elizabeth Olsen. She seems perfect in this trailer featured on THR.

Music Video Monday! Of Monsters and Men: "Little Talks"

I was driving to the salt mines the other morning and a great tune on the radio piqued my interest. “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men was that song.

Now I know I'm probably behind the curve here - the rest of the blog was already well aware of the Icelandic band and the song in question. But dammit if this isn't a great tune and today I thought I’d share it and its unique video with you lucky folks.

Let me give you a little taste of what’s to come: the video starts with the band members as steampunkish air pirates cruising around in their own dirigible when a meteor swooshes by. The band investigates the fallen space rock in time to meet lead singer/alien goddess Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir as she explodes out of the meteorite. Shortly after Super Nanna joins the band on their adventure, a giant, two-headed bird is like, “F*ck dirigibles!” and attacks the band. Super Nanna makes quick work of the bird but the damage to the band’s vessel is done. The group continues on their adventure on foot, only to encounter more ferocious beasts.

Side note - this is essentially the story of how T, Pat, Nick, and I met and formed this blog.

I love the animation and the contrast between the black and white and colors in this video. After checking it out below, why not watch the live performance of “Little Talks” that follows? Admit it, you’re curious about what Super Nanna looks like in real life...

Let me know what you think of the video!

Favorite Scene Friday! Girls Just Want To Have Fun

We're getting a pretty intense case of nostalgia on this Favorite Scene Friday, and it sure is fun!  Fun as in...it's just what girls want to, like, have.  It's Girls Just Want To Have Fun, people!!!  And no, I'm not talking about the song.  Even better, it's the movie.

While I couldn't find any sort of quality scene from the film online (damn you YouTube), I feel like the trailer offers up a pretty good idea of just how awesome this movie is.  The story goes like this: when Janey moves to the big bad city of Chicago, her father becomes more determined than ever to keep her under lock and key. But it's her desire to dance - more specifically, to dance on DTV (like MTV but a million times cooler and all about dancing) - that has her risking everything.  Will DTV be her destiny...or her downfall?  The cast includes a young (and actually cute) Sarah Jessica Parker, an equally young (but somehow she still looks 30) Helen Hunt, a very nerdy Jonathan Silverman, and a prepubescent (and pre-psychotic) Shannon Doherty.  It's got a goody two shoes catholic school girl daughter, a strict army general father, a dreamy boyfriend from the wrong side of the tracks, a mean rich girl (that vicious bitch Natalie Sands), some very strict nuns, and LOADS of dancing.  It's like the perfect recipe for one of the best 80s movies you've never seen!

To tell you how much I love this film, I'll have to take you for a stroll down memory lane.  On my eighth birthday, my parents bestowed upon me one of the greatest gifts I have ever received:  a beautiful, shining VHS copy of this movie masterpiece. Every day for the rest of the summer, my cousins and I watched it.  We were totally obsessed. We talked like the girls in the movie, we dressed like them, and we most certainly danced like them.  Unfortunately, like everything else, that summer came to an end, but my love for GJWTHF has not once, in my 22 years since that birthday, ever waned. EVER.

Happy Friday, folks!
